Motocross introductions: how young riders can get into the sport

Article written by Jai Constantinou of Empire Kawasaki

Being introduced to a sport or taking on hobbies during childhood has many benefits. It can be seen as an incentive for children to get active, socialise, enjoy family time, and ultimately be an outlet for all the youthful energy to be channelled into.

The Introduction

The initial introduction into the sport can be the most challenging part, and a lack of equipment can only make things more difficult. However, aside from just riding itself, there are many ways to be introduced to the sport, attending a professional event which there are numerous nationwide, following athletes on social media or even just watching the action on TV. When it comes to getting kids involved with dirt bikes early, the benefits are almost endless. There aren’t many people that don’t stay involved after being first introduced. The most important part is bridging the gap, and making the initial introduction into sport more accessible.

Social media has been influential in the marketing of the sport and appealing to a bigger audience.

Other avenues to get kids into the sport can be found through 'come and try ride days' where coaches will assist young kids on a designated track with supplied bikes. This is a fantastic way for the youth to try the sport in a safe environment. These can be seen at selected events such as AusProMX rounds or the MotoGP at Phillip Island.

Have a Go

If young riders already have access to equipment, coaching days are a great way to help teach the fundamentals of riding. This helps make riding both safer and more enjoyable for the kids!

Another activity to help introduce new-level riders or potential fans could also be even before this stage. Sometimes, the dirt bike spark can be ignited even before kids have sat on a dirt bike. Meet and greets with motocross teams are a great example of this.

Previously, Empire Kawasaki has set up the race truck and bikes at a local track or motorcycle dealership in suburban areas to give fans a peek behind the racing curtain. This may include personalised tours as well as a range of free giveaways such as gift bags, posters, and stickers. I still have posters signed by professional riders from when I was just six. These events can also show kids what is possible in our sport providing opportunities for riders, mechanics, and all the rest. Details for these events will be made public through the social media channels of teams and professional riders.

Create Great Memories

Quality time spent with friends and family is another fantastic benefit of the sport. The close bond you develop while travelling around the country whether it be chasing races or even just adventuring to new riding locations is really like no other! Some of the most incredible memories have come from the weekend road trips spent camping, making friends, and visiting new places.

Get Healthy

Above all else, one of the biggest pros of the sport of dirt bikes is the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. It’s incredibly demanding on the physical front while still being fun at the same time. Riding motorcycles is an outlet for the youth, which through the expression of freedom and adventure can create so much positivity.  Along with that comes the challenges and tough nature which ultimately teaches persistence, patience as well as gratification.

Getting a child started up in riding dirt bikes has so many valuable life lessons, friendships, and benefits. It’s a tight-knit industry with plenty of benefits.
